The Art of Handwritten Communication

Guidance for thoughtful correspondence and writing practice.

Thank You Notes

A handwritten thank you note is a personal way to express appreciation. Here are some considerations for writing effective thank you notes.

Timing

Send thank you notes within a reasonable timeframe, typically within one to two weeks of the occasion. Promptness shows thoughtfulness and consideration.

Content

Be specific about what you're thanking the person for. Mention the gift, gesture, or action, and explain how it was meaningful or useful to you.

Tone

Match the tone to your relationship with the recipient. Formal occasions may call for more structured language, while personal relationships allow for warmth and familiarity.

Presentation

Choose appropriate stationery for the occasion. Quality paper and clear handwriting enhance the message and show care in the presentation.

Fountain Pen Compatibility

Paper Selection

Not all papers work well with fountain pens. Look for paper that resists feathering and bleeding. Heavier weight papers (100gsm or higher) and coated papers often perform better.

Ink Considerations

Different inks have different properties. Some inks may take longer to dry or may be more prone to bleeding. Test inks on your chosen paper before writing important documents.

Nib Size

Finer nibs generally work better on thinner or less fountain-pen-friendly papers, as they deposit less ink. Broader nibs may require higher-quality paper to prevent bleeding.

Testing

Before committing to a full page, test your pen and ink combination on a corner of the paper. This helps you understand how the ink will behave and whether the paper is suitable.

Writing instruments and paper

Writing Practice

Regular practice helps improve handwriting consistency and comfort with your writing instruments.
